Art Phillips

Two-time EMMY Award winner for “Outstanding Music Direction & Composition in a Drama Series” for the US television drama “Santa Barbara”, Art Phillips has been working in film and television for over 30 years.

Art's career began in the early 70's in Los Angeles where he was one of LA's top session guitarists, composers and orchestrators working and recording for popular artists Barry Manilow, Minnie Riperton, Demis Roussos, The Carpenters, Smokey Robinson, Dory Previn, Burl Ives, The Lettermen and a long list of television series and feature films before moving to Sydney, Australia in 1987.

Art was musical director, conductor and orchestrator on live concert tours for Demis Roussos, Dory Previn, John Rowles and Ricky May, and toured as guitarist for Manilow for over 3 years. He produced recordings for Demis Roussos, Barry Manilow, Sally Kellerman ('Hot Lips' from MASH, the feature film) and John Rowles, achieving a Gold Record award for his production work on the album “Another Chapter” for Rowles.

Art's earlier composition credits include writing incidental music for the US television series “The Love Boat”, penned the R&B single “Here We Go” for Minnie Riperton (her last top 10 Billboard charting hit before her passing) and co-wrote the Motown Record release “Now That I Have You” for vocal artist Teena Marie.

Highlights of Phillips' more recent scoring credits include the television series Missing Persons Unit / series 1 & series 2, Pirate Islands: The Lost Treasure Of Fiji, The Secret Lives of Sleepwalkers, Outback House, the telemovie Reprisal, Neighbours, The Flying Vet, Guiding Light, Secrets, The Fatal Bond, Signal One - Bullet Down Under and Sher Mountain Mystery. In 1995, he was awarded “The APRA Award for Best Soundtrack Album” for his score to the ABC television series “The Flying Vet” by The Australian Guild of Screen Composers. Other nominations include “Best Soundtrack Album” for “Dramatic Impact 1” in the AGSC Screen Music Awards and a nomination in the AFI awards for “Best Original Music in a Feature Film” for Sher Mountain Mystery.

Phillips also has a long list of credits with writing and producing original music for Production Music Companies out of the USA and the U.K., where during the past 9 years he has accomplished releases of 45 CD titles in a diverse array of styles. His music is used in television shows throughout the world including America's Most Wanted, NYPD Blue, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Survivor, 60 Minutes, Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, The Ricki Lake Show, Harry's Practice, The Great Outdoors, Extra-The Entertainment Magazine Show, The Today Show, 20/20, The Rex Hunt Fishing Show and numerous trailers, promos, sports themes and advertising campaigns.

Art is the President of The Australian Guild of Screen Composers, since 2001, and was the Vice-President of the organization from 1992 ~ 2000. His academic qualifications include Master of Music Studies, Griffith University/Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Art has written numerous subjects and delivered lectures in screen music composition, orchestration and conducting for Griffith University (Gold Coast, QLD), Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Mackay, QLD), The Australian Institute of Music (Sydney, NSW) and The Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Brisbane, QLD).
