Phil Kakulas

Phil Kakulas is best known as bassist & songwriter for The Blackeyed Susans a band whose sound is an evocative mix of country, folk and soul.

Their first EP, Some Births are Worse than Murders, was released in 1990 on Waterfront Records. Acclaimed by music critics in Australia and the UK the record spent several weeks at No. l on the independent charts in Australia.

Kakulas was to leave the band, departing for Sydney with band Martha's Vineyard but later rejoined The Blackeyed Susans in the mid 1990s.

Having dominated the Australian Indie scene through the 1990s and into the new millennium, their last release “Shangri-la” was in 2003 and earned them a nomination at the 2003 ARIA Awards for Best Adult Contemporary Release.

As well as performing on Shangri-La, Phil also produced the album with help from Killjoy Craig Pilkington.
